One of my most favorite Classic Song is "Upuan" by Florante.

Perhaps many of young Pinoy has never heard this song. I believe Florante wrote it as if he was Late President Marcos was singing. Do I like the song because I’m Pro Marcos? Well I’m not and I’m not against him either. I was born during the dark days of Martial Law but I was very young back then to recall and understand what’s happening around me.

I really don’t know much about Marcos except what is written in History, some says, that the history during Marcos reign is uncertain, some events were not documented even some of those written were altered — Well, that’s what they say.

But I am not here to discuss the success and ordeals during Marcos Presidency. It’s just that every time I hear the song "Upuan", I feel petty for our country. I feel petty for what our country has become and what it is becoming. It’s not Marcos nor Erap nor GMA, It not just the Presidents, It not just our leaders and their minions. Hard to Admit, but it’s all of us.

Smirking now!? You know it’s true! We Filipinos are "Follow the Leader" oriented in a wrong way. I’d observed this many time when crossing road - I won’t cross the road if the pedestrian signal is red even when no car is passing - others will follow me of course well just for a while.... Because if someone — They need just one people, one leader, to cross, everyone else will follow and I’ll be the only one left on the other side of the road. A simple corruption.

Yes it’s corruption. That’s what the song means. Not only on the national level but down to the unit of our society, (technically, Family is the smallest unit of our society, Hehehe) our community. The song Upuan is for us — the song Upuan is for you.
